There is a famous Chassidic story of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, who once found his young grandson, Sholom Dov Ber, awash in tears. When he asked the boy why he was crying, the tearful child responded that his teacher had taught the verse, “And G-d revealed himself to Abraham.”

“Why,” asked Sholom Dov Ber, “does G-d not show himself to me?”

Answered Rabbi Menachem Mendel, “When a righteous person realizes at the age of 99 that he must circumcise himself, that he must continue to perfect himself, he is worthy of G-d’s revelation.”
