Brit Yosef Yitzchak is an international non-profit organization dedicated to connecting Jewish men to their heritage by providing Brit Milah, free of charge, for any Jew anywhere in the world. The organization makes all the arrangements, organizing each procedure in a hospital with top surgeons and a Mohel.
All expenses are paid, including a reception with kosher food following the ceremony to celebrate the joyful occasion. Because a majority of the adults that receive this service did not have a Bar-Mitzvah either, the organization gives a gift of a tallit and tefillin.
Founded in 1990 by Rabbi Yaron Amit, Brit Yosef Yitzchak continues to develop a state-of-the-art Brit Milah resource center as well as a 24-hour hotline. Aided by a network of volunteers, the organization has performed over 27,000 adult circumcisions plus over 10,000 infant procedures to date.
Rabbi Zalman Gansburg is executive director of Brit Yosef Yitzchak in the United States. His Florida office is located at 1108 Kane Concourse, suite 307, in Bay Harbor, Florida.
There are many reasons why a Jewish man may never have had a Brit. Oppressive regimes in Soviet Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe outlawed Brit Milah, making it a crime punishable by the most severe of repercussions. As a result, hundreds of thousand of Jews missed out on the observance of this circumcision.
Other Jewish babies even in the free world, have been born into families where parents have chosen not to have them circumcised. A Jew is a Jew, but without a Brit the primal connection goes back to the time of Abraham is somehow missing.
Brit Yosef Yitzchak is the only organization that responds to any request for a Brit anywhere around the globe. They get requests from Jewish men in different countries all around the world. The research process to confirm that a potential recipient is, indeed, Jewish is sometimes difficult and complicated.
There is no “logical” reason that an older man would want to put himself through this procedure. According to Rabbi Gansburg, “It is the neshama of the Jew that feels incomplete”. At this time, the oldest man to have circumcision through the organization was 81 years old.
The Brit is performed under general anesthesia, in a hospital setting, with top surgeons and Mohalim. Al-though the mohczlirn do not charge for their services and there are many volunteers, including many doctors, the cost of this service is still very high. There are traveling expenses of the Mohel, hospital fees and all other medical expenses. The average cost of the procedure is $680.
Brit Yosef Yitzchak has already reached 209 cities around the globe. They perform approximately 3,000 circumcisions a year at an average of 10 a day. There is no day without a Brit. The organization has the manpower to do 100 procedures a day, and thus 30,000 a year. It is only lack of funds that prevents them from reaching this goal.
Rabbi Gansburg states, “It’s an exceptionally rewarding feeling knowing that another Jew has the great fortune to carry with himself an integral Mitzvah for the rest of his life.” The Rabbi maintains that this experience is life altering. Ganzburg shares a quote from a man who was able to have this procedure through the help of Brit Yosef Yitzchak. Sam Rabinowitz declared, “I was waiting for this moment for 55 years. I am a Jew now!”
Rabbi Gansburg offers, “As we know, at the time of the Brit all the doors of heaven are open.” He urges participation in this vital and important Mitzvah.
